Local Sightseeing Trips
This is a must-do experience in your time in Fiordland. Doubtful Sound is the biggest sound in New Zealand, with a large variety of flora and fauna unique to the area. These include tree orchids, ancient beech forests, seals, dolphins, and weka.
The sound has been carved out of granite by glacial action over millions of years. The most spectacular feature of Doubtful Sound is the waterfalls, which send tons of water cascading down the mountains.
Day Trips
There are two companies that operate a day trip into Doubtful Sound. The boats of both companies leave from Pearl Harbour which is a 5-minute drive from the Manapouri Lakeview Motor Inn. We will provide a courtesy coach for those guests who require transport to the harbour. Both trips include a 40-minute boat trip across Lake Manapouri to West Arm where the Manapouri Power Station is situated, then a 40-minute coach trip to Deep Cove - the mooring station at the base of Doubtful Sound.
Fiordland Explorer Charters
This is a more intimate and adventurous travel experience as the vessel seats a maximum of only 20 people. This a 4-hour cruise on the sound 9.30am - 6.00pm (all year round), return to Pearl Harbour.
$250 per adult, and $80 per child
Trips must be booked in advance as they can take a maximum of only 20 passengers.
Complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits are provided.
Lunches cannot be purchased on board. They must be pre-ordered at a cost of $20 each, or you can supply your own.
Real Journeys
The Real Journeys vessel will seat 70 and is obviously much bigger. The bigger size of the vessel makes it less subject to sea movement so it will provide a smoother ride for those not used to the sea. This is a 3-hour cruise on the sound.
